Artist Statement
In my current work, I focus on the interplay between constructed order and organic movement through ceramic form. Inspired by large-scale manmade structures and natural forms, I break down complex designs into smaller, repeatable elements that guide my process. This technique allows me to introduce a methodical approach to my artwork, where the repetition of forms creates a sense of order.
I often divide my forms symmetrically, using line as a way to impose balance and harmony. This approach evokes the organized and purposeful patterns seen in the natural world, such as the veins on a leaf or the symmetry of a shell, where repetition and design coexist.
In addition to the repeated patterns, I carve into and alter smooth surfaces, interrupting their continuity to allow glaze to pool in crevices and break on edges to create more textural interest. This creates a dynamic relationship between surface, light, and form, where the smooth and textured areas interact with light by casting shadows and highlighting details. I gravitate towards luminary designs that can hold light inside of them, transforming the surroundings of the vessel itself as well as the viewer’s experience of the piece.
My work is driven by the desire to explore the connection between human made structure and the natural world, recognizing that humans and everything we create is an intrinsic part of it. By balancing rigidity with softness, I aim to create pieces that question how form, function, and the natural world are inherently linked.
